The term “mainstream media” differs from alternative media outlets and sources because it is widely used and viewed by a nation’s public audience. It is where the “average Joe” receives relevant news and is great at instilling fear amongst people. The mainstream media determines what is popular. Often this comes with a portrayal of panic, chaos and an exaggerated and/or unproved scenario given to the public to worry about and run with. Some mainstream media outlets would be “The New York Times”, CNN, NBC, ABC, FOX, TBS, TNT, etc.
